The idea of “enough.”  It’s one of the most important concepts in our lives.  Often we want more than we have now.  I have been guilty of it most of my life.  I still am … however I am working on it.

More money, more toys, better furniture, a bigger/better house, more or better cars, more clothes, more success …

And what happens when we get more?  Mostly we aren’t satisfied.  There are ads for new cars (“we’ll even make your payment if you lose your job”!), new computers, new cell phones, new clothes.  There are entire television channels dedicated to selling you more stuff or to making you think what you have is not good enough.  It’s impossible to satisfy that hunger for more, because our culture is not satisfied with what we have.  We are wired to want more.

Ask yourself how much is enough.  How much do you need in order to be satisfied? I suggest that the answer is that most of us (including me) already have enough … possibly more than enough.

So … what does “enough” mean? Read More »

Do you feel guilty because you’re not doing enough?  I’m the first to admit that I don’t always remain calm when I don’t get everything done that I planned. Sometimes I get distracted; sometimes unforeseen events happen which get in the way of my ambitions; sometimes I simply tried to take on too much at once.

And sometimes I have a hard time not caring about unimportant things. I want the dishes to be clean and the carpets vacuumed … everything neat and tidy.  The problem is things don’t usually work like this.  In fact, they almost never work like this … meaning if I don’t relax I will always be frustrated.

The point is there’s always something to be done, always something else that needs to be finished, always some goal needing accomplished … and then we can feel happy (or so we think).  Right?  Of course, there’s only one problem.  Nothing is ever complete.  Not for long, at least.  Soon we remember another task, and the cycle starts all over again.

So if that time and place is impossible to reach, we have to stop caring about unimportant things. Read More »

Receptivity only happens in the present moment.”

My receivers seem to have been out of commission lately. Try as I might, not much new has been cranking.  This traditionally idea-flooded imagination is experiencing a drought.  What to write about?  What kind of programs to offer?  Even coming up with new dinner menus is daunting.  A lot of the same old same keeps floating around.

Last week I was creating a “personal retreat” for a friend and client.  As I pulled together inspirational writings and prayer practices for her day of Sabbath, I explored one of the practices myself -”The Desire Prayer” from Teresa A. Blythe’s, 50 Ways to Pray.

The instructions are quite simple: Read More »

There are magical places that exist within each one of us, inside our minds, hearts, and souls. By visiting these places, we can tap into the infinite and bring peace and abundance into our lives.

Each journey will be unique, as we are unique, so you may want to have a notebook and pen nearby to record your experience afterward. You may choose to have another person read the meditation to you so you may experience it more fully.

Find a comfortable place, close your eyes, open your mind, and prepare yourself to travel within.

There is a time to journey, a time to see not only the outside world but also the world within yourself. However, this is not one of those times.

Now is the time for peace, for letting go of the things that have been troubling you.  Have a relaxing little vacation at the Villa by the Sea, and forget your responsibilities for a time. Read More »

Yesterday while on the phone with a wise friend, she said, “Sounds like you are riding the waves. You can feel the motion changing, but you just can’t control it.”

It sounded so easy when she said it.  At least I could understand why I had been feeling a bit “seasick” lately.

Even though I have lived within driving distance of the “shore” in New Jersey, the “ocean” in California, or the “beach” in North Carolina and Alabama, I have never tried surfing. Nothing about it appealed to me … Standing, (if you ever get to that part) on a skinny board, tossed about wildly, and wondering if sharks are lurking below … is of absolutely no interest to me.

Why would I want my life to be like that?  Yet I wonder if we aren’t always surfing - feeling the motion changing around us.

I decided to check out surfing tips on the web hoping they would help me ride some of the waves I am on right now.  I went to chiff.com and found some great stuff: Read More »
